What is Color Rendering Index and Color Temperature?

Can’t tell the difference between the black and navy-colored socks in your walk-in closet under your old fluorescent lights? Could be that the current lighting source has a very low CRI level. Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a measurement of how natural colors render under an artificial white light source when compared with sunlight. The index is measured from 0-100, with a perfect 100 indicating that colors of objects under the light source appear the same as they would under natural sunlight. CRIs under 80 are generally considered ‘poor’ while ranges over 90 are considered ‘great’. Color temperature is a characteristic of light that describes the perceived color of the light source. It is typically measured in Kelvin (K). The color temperature of a light source refers to its warmth or coolness and is often associated with different shades of white light.

Why we adopt CRI>90 and 6500K  LED for Lumin system?

  1. Color accuracy: High CRI LED lighting accurately reproduces the true colors of objects. In dental procedures, precise color perception is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment. By using high CRI LED lighting, dentists can observe the patient’s oral condition, including tooth color and tissue health, more accurately, thereby improving the accuracy and effectiveness of the surgery.

  2. Enhanced visibility of details: High CRI LED lighting provides clearer visibility of details. Dental procedures often involve working on intricate oral structures, such as tooth surface restoration or gum tissue manipulation. By using high CRI LED lighting, dentists can see oral details more clearly, allowing for precise surgical interventions.

  3. Day light simulation:The color temperature of 6500K is often associated with daylight conditions, specifically with a clear sky at noon. It represents a “cool white” or “daylight white” light source, which is often used as a reference point for artificial lighting to mimic natural daylight. It is worth noting that the actual color temperature of daylight can vary depending on various factors such as atmospheric conditions and geographical location. However, 6500K is commonly considered to be a representative value for daylight color temperature.

Conclusion: adopting LED lighting with a Color Rendering Index (CRI) above 90 and a color temperature of 6500K offers several benefits in the Lumin system, particularly in dental procedures
